This paper built on a previous publication (Lomas et al 2013) and was performed with support from the EPSRC CTD (EP/F/500491/1) and IMRC Regenerative Medicine (EP/F/500491/1), and the EU FP7 IRSES “HYANJI SCAFFOLD” project led by Keele University. This collaborative study was performed at Tsinghua University and the Peking University Hospital Number 1. This study has attracted conference presentations (World Biomaterials Congress, 2012; TCES, 2011) and has resulted in follow-on funding applications to MRC, NSCF, and EU FP7.
