In two-electron, systems, such as astrophysical situations where two hydrogen atoms are far apart the exchange energy (the difference between the energies of the two lowest states) is very difficult to calculate but it is an important parameter in the physics of the interactions. In this paper an asymptotic formula is derived for this difference for the two hydrogen atoms. This challenges previous estimates and has invoked interesting correspondence. This is another example of our collaboration with the Harvard-Smithsonian centre for Astrophysics and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
