Additional information

The paper presents the first systematic experimental and computational study into the performance of an air-curtain seal used to control the leakage flow over the tip shroud of a turbine rotor used in jet engines. The research demonstrated that this type of seal has the potential to reduce or eliminate shroud leakage, whilst having a practical level of clearance between the stationary and moving components. It received both the ASME 2009 Turbomachinery Committee Best Paper Award and the ASME 2009 Gas Turbine Award, which is awarded in recognition of an oustanding contribution to the gas turbines literature.
