Multimode fibre transmission has attracted huge interest recently because it is seen as a way of going beyond the limited bandwidth of single mode fibers. This paper presents the first detailed analytical solution of one of the crucial problems in designing multimode fiber system: understanding how light coupled into a fibre is distributed amongst the propagating modes. This was one of the papers that led to Dr Payne, jointly with UCL, Cambridge and Southampton Universities winning a major EPSRC grant (EP/J008745/1), total value £1.3 million between the four institutions, of which Oxford was awarded £382k.
