Additional information

This paper, the result of a multi-disciplinary collaboration with the Oxford Breast Care Unit, presents the AFUSON system, a controlled ultrasound acquisition system, proposed for repeatable ultrasound-based elasticity imaging on the breast. In a companion clinical application journal article the AFUSON system is used to show that quantifying mass slip, via so-called “slip imaging” is a useful adjunct to conventional B-mode and elastography to reduce ambiguity in breast lesion assessment with clinical assessment on a 70 patient clinical study (Ultrasound in Med. Biol 36(2) 2010). Slip-imaging is only enabled by controlled acquisition as described in this paper.
