Additional information

New manufacturing techniques allow multiply connected passages to be cast into gas turbine blades and vanes. This paper presented some of the first data on such cooling features, identifying the removal of the cooling passage boundary layer (through bleed holes) as a means of significantly increasing the cooling performance. The paper also showed that the internal surfaces of such connecting holes do not contribute significantly to heat transfer enhancement - contrary to previous workers' data. The work led directly to further research (at Oxford) into intricately cast internal cooling systems, specifically in the FP7 programme ERICKA (7M Euro, total).
