This paper describes a new modulation scheme that efficiently uses the bandwidth of a free space optical communications link and uses simple single photon detectors, as opposed to relatively complex linear response avalanche detectors. This work has led to the development of a detector combining the advantages of a single photon detector (sensitivity) and the linear response of an avalanche detector. A patent has been applied for (GB1300276.1).
