Additional information

This paper describes the first application of optimal control to the position control problem in inertia friction welding (IFW). The time-varying optimal control methodology developed in this work achieved an of order of magnitude improvement in the accuracy of positioning and orientation of the IFW test facility at the Institute for Machine Tools and Industrial Management, Technische Universitat Munchen. The approach is the basis for the current work on the development of Model Predictive Control strategies for friction welding control.
