English abstract

This chapter explores the relationship between British television and public service broadcasting, with particular reference to the distinctiveness of its approach compared to other European nations. It examines how each channel has served a different purpose in this regard, while it argues that it was the creation of BBC2 that signposted the future direction for British television as a medium that emphasised plurality.

Co-written by Mark Aldridge and Lucy Mazdon
