Additional information

The research yielded a novel, quantifiable method to assess how much of the material had been melted by a laser and correlated the results with mechanical properties. This method is expected to be adopted by industry (under ASTM standards committee F42) to provide more depth to Quality Assurance and thus de-risk application of laser sintering within manufacturing. This is very timely as Additive Manufacturing progresses from a prototyping tool to a manufacturing process. This new level of understanding has helped the researchers to secure industry funding to develop new materials for Laser Sintering under confidential research contracts and consultancy.
