Residual stresses in welds result in distortion and encourage premature failure. Stretching component during welding is known to alter residual stresses, but process is poorly understood. Work uses high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction and finite-element analysis to perform one of first systematic studies of weld tensioning. This establishes, for first time, link between applied stress and resulting residual-stress profiles. Impact of weld sectioning on stress relaxation, an important but neglected area, is also quantified.
