Calculation of Muscle Loading and Joint Contact Forces in Irish Dance
Research into the movement of dancers has traditionally been exclusively subjective and qualitative. This approach has been sufficient to investigate the aesthetics of dance but provides insufficient information to undertake a quantitative analysis of dance injury mechanisms. This publication marks the start of objective biomechanical analysis applied within the field of dance.
This paper is the first example of the application of biomechanical muscle modelling to dance. As a result of this publication, a full day workshop on dance biomechanics was organised as a part of the Annual Conference of Dance Medicine and Science which was attended by 40 delegates from research institutions around the world.
