Additional information

The methodology developed in this paper was adopted in Arup’s CO2ST tool, which led to consultancy with Arup on evaluating embodied energy of house foundations for the NHBC (National House-Building Council) and Roger Bullivant, retaining wall structures for Highways Agency and earthworks operations for C A Blackwell. It generated two ICASE studentships with Arup to investigate CO2 emissions from construction showing that the assessment of whole life carbon, not just capital carbon, is required for infrastructure. In 2012, the US National Science Foundation sent a team led by Drexel University to develop a US-UK collaboration in this area.
