This paper won the Gaydon Prize for the most significant UK contribution to the 32nd International Symposium on Combustion, 2008. The work has led to a new line of research on ignition phenomena in spray combustion, and continuing developments will form part of the work of the UK Turbulent Reacting Flows Consortium which has been funded by EPSRC (EP/K025791/1, GBP113k, August 2013).
