Love Brid

Love Brid was one of three short films commissioned as ‘Coastcards’ by Animate Projects as part of CABE’s ‘Sea Change’ cultural regeneration initiative. It was filmed in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, and made with the support of the people of Bridlington including fishermen, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and Bridlington Spa. Love Brid premiered at SeaScape, an international conference exploring culture as a regenerative force for coastal communities, which took place in Skegness in October 2009.

 Love Brid was constructed entirely from still photographic sequences, and extends my research into the relationship between the still and the moving image. It was made for both a conventional screening and an online/iPhone context and intended to be browsed interactively as a series of stills, or digital flipbook, as well as be seen as a linear animated film. It is downloadable through iTunes as well as from the Animate Project website accompanied by a contextual essay on the three Coastcard films by writer Gareth Gardner. Love Brid was screened at Tate Modern in December 2009 as part of an evening of selected films commissioned and produced by Animate Projects. It has screened as part of an Animate/British Council selection of British animated shorts at the Haifa Film Festival 2010; in 'Move on Up' a programme for Canary Wharf Big Screen 2012, and in ‘Welcome to the Treasuredome’ at ICCI 360, Weymouth as part of the cultural Olympiad 2012. An animated GIF from the opening sequence of Love Brid was shown as part of Born in 1987: The Animated GIF at The Photographer’s Gallery, London.
