Additional information

<28>This paper is the culmination of a coherent body of work to identify deteriorating hospital in-patients using their vital signs (temperature, pulse, etc.) to trigger timely escalations of their care. It analyses a large dataset formed by the integration of the core hospital Patient Administration System (to derive the outcome, mortality within N hours of vital signs observation set) and the VitalPAC (http://www.vitalpac.co.uk/) database (vital signs). It proposes a superior Early Warning Score (EWS) that, in 2012 in slightly modified form, became the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) published by the Royal College of Physicians.
