English abstract

This article is concerned with the relation between Rawls's Theory of Justice and the classical liberalism to be found in the work of JS Mill. The article first outlines the Rawlsian liberalism: the sort of liberal egalitarianism it endorses and the grounding of this in the value of solidarity among citizens. It also explains the rationale for moving to political liberalism from the kind of liberalism found in Mill (what Rawls labels comprehensive liberalism), and why it is no part of Rawls's own conception of a just system that it need be equally fair to all conceptions of the good.
