Additional information

This was a group exhibition curated by Zavier Ellis (Charlie Smith London) and Pilvi Kalhama (Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Helsinki) held at Gallery Kalhama & Piipo Contemporary, (now Helsinki Contemporary), Finland. The Gallery shows established and emerging international contemporary artists and curates group exhibitions of invited artists. This was the first time that these artists had exhibited in Finland. Shepherd contributed 4 paintings.

Research Imperatives

The exhibition provided an overview of contemporary British painting in the aftermath of the Young British Artists’ School of the 1990s. It asked whether ‘national’ characteristics can still permeate work created in a multi-ethnic society. The artists, working in contrast to the Young British Artists, use miniature scale paintings to question the representation of the traditional. Shepherd addressed English romanticism, the sense of place and historical impact, using eerily populated landscapes to illustrate how interior worlds represent those of the exterior.

Supported by the British Council, the exhibition was attended by the British Ambassador to Finland. A public panel discussion, including the artist; Marko Mäetamm, Head of Department of Fine Arts, Estonian Academy of Arts, Talinn; and Silja Rantanen, Professor of Painting, Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki, discussed the internationalisation of artists, the expectations of the art world and national character of art.
