English abstract

Of all the filmmakers of the so-called Polish School, Andrzej Munk probably strived the most in the search for the reality of the individual. This search was present across all the arts in Central/Eastern Europe during last century’s Soviet style totalitarian regimes as a reaction to the enforced collective ideology, and the imposition of that bizarrely termed ‘realist’ aesthetics, socialist realism. This monograph analyses, from this perspective, Munk’s oeuvre, key to the understanding of the complexities of post-WWII Central/Eastern European cinema and society, and traces the influence he had in other film movements like the Czechoslovak and Hungarian New Waves.
