This is a double screen projection and surround sound installation shown at Meet Factory, Prague, which aims to promote international contemporary visual arts to the general public. It was curated by Dušan Zahoranský.

Research Imperatives

The research explores the question How can the projected image be used to convey the material and physical essence of place?

Almost all films could be said to explore place in some capacity. However most contemporary works concerned with notions of place have focused on networks and social relations. This practice-led research seeks to critically evaluate ways in which artists’ film can capture and convey the material and physical ‘essence’ of place through a phenomenological approach. Bruno (Verso, 2002), discusses ‘this shift away from the long standing focus of film theory on sight, towards the construction of a moving theory of site’. This movement from optic to haptic reflects films’ position within the spatial arts, sitting more comfortably next to architecture and theatre than many of the visual arts. Artists’ film presented in a gallery context, deals with more than one space; this research acknowledges the connections between the film space, the filmic space and the gallery space. By immersing the viewer in the recorded sights and sounds of a real environment, the projected films act as a metaphysical bridge between the projected world and the environment that has been recorded.

This practice is characterised by a spirit of enquiry, exploring ways to capture, re-present and represent within the gallery space the ‘material’ and ‘physical’ qualities of a place. By constructing camera motorized rigs to capture and create moving images that could not be perceived by the human eye, this mechanical process of filming is an investigative way of looking, less about ‘viewing’ and more about ‘searching’ and ‘experiencing’ a place.

This work was further exhibited at Space Gallery, Barcelona (2012) and Wye Gallery, Berlin (2012).
