Pages 41-47, 'Language and dialect', written by A.M. Bowie (Oxford), were first published as pp. 22-27 of Bowie's 2007 commentary on Book 8 of Herodotus in the same Cambridge University Press series.
This book comprises an introduction of 48 pages (6 of which are by A.M.Bowie), a Greek text of 40 pages (with many departures from previous texts), a commentary of 220 pages, and 25 pages of bibliography. It is the product of six years' research. Hornblower combines research into literary, historical, and archaeological aspects of Herodotus.
