Additional information

This book chapter, in a volume devoted to Mendelssohn the performer (and more generally his performance-related rather than compositional activities), outlines Mendelssohn’s powers as a conductor, his organisation and disposition of orchestras and seating, the orchestras with which he worked, concert programming and, finally, some remarks upon ‘historically informed’ Mendelssohn orchestra practice, drawing upon my research of nineteenth-century string performing practices.
