This is an invited chapter for a major international review volume. In 2013 the World Yearbook of Education focused on "Educators, Professionalism and Politics." In response the chapter offers both a summary and critique of the contemporary discourse about the academic profession. As well as secondary analysis it draws on in the author's own research as highlighted in reports from the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) and presented at meetings including the Presidential Address to the Society for Research into Higher Education and the House of Commons HEPI breakfast series.
