This paper is one of a body of work on the use of examples in mathematics teaching and learning (see http://www.education.ox.ac.uk/about-us/directory/professor-anne-watson/ for a full list) which has been cited over 500 times. This paper appeared in a special issue based on an invited workshop at the University of Siena on The Role of Mathematical Examples in Argumentation & Proof, and in Conceptualization & Definition. The workshop itself was in part informed by this body of work, as can be seen from the citations in the special issue.
