Research on science teacher learning has focused principally on learning pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in Initial Teacher Education or Continuing Professional Development programmes. This study opens up the 'black box' of the school subject department and, for the first time in the literature, examines the school context as a potential site learning PCK. It is a key paper in our ongoing programme of research in this area.
