Significance of output:

We develop an approach to realization radically different from the classical one based on time-invariance. If a system is lossless with respect to a given supply rate, then a minimal realization is obtained straightforwardly by factorizing a constant matrix derived from the system representation and the supply rate. An analogous result holds for the case when system measurements consisting of exponential system trajectories are available. Our approach, based on the interplay between an external structure (a supply rate) and the internal (state) structure of a system, has great potential for application to many other classes of systems, not only finite-dimensional.
