Further Adventures of The Dialectic of Sex: Critical Essays on Shulamith Firestone
Further Adventures of The Dialectic of Sex is the first sustained critical reflection on the feminist theorist Shulamith Firestone. The volume was conceived, co-edited and introduced (pp. 1-8) by Mandy Merck and Stella Sandford. Merck contributed the ‘Prologue: Shulamith Firestone and Sexual Difference’ (pp. 9-26) which locates Firestone’s unique analysis of ‘the sexual distinction’ within the fields of feminist, queer and psychoanalytic theory. A further chapter by Merck, ‘Integration, Intersex and Firestone’s Dialectic’ (pp. 163-193), reconsiders her imbrication of race and gender in the light of the contemporary challenge to sexual norms presented by the South African athlete Caster Semenya.
