Design for sustainable behaviour: strategies and perceptions
This paper presents the culmination of research in the UK’s first PhD on Design for Sustainable Behaviour (DfSB), an emerging field of sustainable design practice. The findings of this PhD directly informed the development of “Carbon, Control and Comfort: User-centred control systems for comfort, carbon saving and energy management”, a three year multi-disciplinary project funded by EPSRC and EON. Several subsequent PhD studies have built on the ‘axis of influence’ model and DfSB typologies proposed in this paper. Two national, and one international workshop on DfSB have been held in the UK, culminating in a symposium at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, which resulted in the formation of an international special interest group, PhD network and special issue of the Journal of Design Research (2012, Vol. 10, No. 1/2).
