Tito: A Biography
This biography represents a revisionist account of Tito’s life and career. Politically active for seventy years, his activities divide into several distinct phases: Comintern operative, partisan leader, orthodox communist, dissident communist, and father of the nation. To address the first and fifth phases required extensive primary research to reveal unstudied aspects of Tito’s career; the second, third and fourth phases were challenges of reinterpretation, where relatively well-established evidence was re-evaluated to bring consistency to the story. The resulting critical insights are thus based on a lengthy period of data collection and analysis. Part of chapter 1 was published in 1989.
