Automatic Metro Map Layout Using Multicriteria Optimization
<20> This paper describes the first demonstrably successful automated layout technique for metro maps. A user study compared the geographic map, the published map and our layout. In all cases our layout improved on the geographic map. In many cases our layout was better than the published map. The results were analysed by novel techniques developed with statisticians. The work formed the basis of Stott’s PhD thesis, supervised by Rodgers. The research lead to a Royal Society Industrial Fellowship for Rodgers which developed schematic layout methods with industrial collaborators, Trafficlink. The paper was the ‘spotlight’ paper of the issue.
