Additional information

Significant work has been undertaken with manufacturers of prosthetic implants. In this work with two UK industrial partners a novel combination for a prosthetic hip joint was evaluated. The zirconia-toughened-alumina head against a carbon reinforced PEEK cup was tested at three inclination angles to evaluate the possible impact of surgical variability. Also in addition to normal parameters such as wear rate, the temperature increase of the lubricant due to frictional heating was measured in situ, which was

novel. Given the encouragingly low wear rate this combination of hard-on-soft bearing is expected to have future impact.
