Publication was delayed by “Stryker” to protect the IP. It won the “PE Publishing Award”; best paper in the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, (H), Journal of Engineering in Medicine, 2009. Used to design a compliant-layered hip which was tested in independent sheep trials in Australia. The outcomes were independently analysed in Cambridge (Khan I, Smith N, Jones E Finch DS and Cameron RE, Biomaterials, 2005, 26(6) 633-643) then limited clinical studies were conducted by Stryker (eric.jones@stryker.com or tej23@iol.ie). This paper formed the basis of the TriboFit hip system and NUsurface knee system by Active Implants, USA (rick.treharne@activeimplants.com).
