Additional information

This is an invited paper for a Special Issue on Unsaturated Soils. It reports different measurements from direct measurements using high suction tensiometers compared to the axis translation technique, which has been the standard method for suction measurement and control for many years. It will have a major impact on the field of unsaturated soils as it demonstrates that measurements using the currently available technique is incorrect.
