Additional information

This paper presents a novel modelling approach for long manufacturing lines with or without re-entrant flows, e.g. semiconductor fabrication plants. It utilises the notion of the clearing function and a modelling approach based on a conservation PDE law is developed. The PDE is discretised and the problem of manufacturing lines modelling is expressed as a boundary value problem. As a result of this paper, it is possible to study shockwaves in manufacturing plants, the use of feedback controllers for inventory routing, and address more general control design problems using the proposed dynamic nonlinear state space representation.
