Additional information

Although marketed as a second ediiton, the original version covered only the period from 1900 to 1996. This new version covers the period 1830 to 2010. Chapters 1-3 (pp.1-67), and chapters 16-17 (pp.243-75) are entirely new. The remainder of the text is to a large extent rewritten.

Pages 1-68 and 243-275 is entirely new material.

Chapters 6-8 thoroughly revised taking account of new material from Philip Williamson (Baldwin), Richard Grayson (Austen Chamberlain) and Robert Self's published three volume edition of the Neville Chamberlain letters. Substantial revisions in chapters 14-15 on Thatcher Governments, take into account the work of John Campbell on Thatcher, and Seldon's work on John Major.

Comparison between the two interpretations also reveals a shift in direction, because of the new material, taking a more critical line than the original. This amounts to a significant rewrite and more extended coverage with new material.
