Human single-neuron responses at the threshold of conscious recognition
This paper describes the responses of single neurons in human subjects –implanted with intracranial electrodes for clinical reasons– to picture presentations. We show that single neurons fired only upon recognition, thus giving a strong neural correlate of conscious perception. The paper was covered in several press releases (including La Recherche and United Press International), it was featured in the Research Highlights from Nature Reviews Neuroscience, and it was selected as one of the “Breaking news in Neuroscience” by the federation of European Neuroscience Societies (fENS) in 2008. A project building up from these results was funded by MRC (£367k).
