Additional information

Elsner conceived this volume jointly with Huskinson, commissioned the papers and commented on all of them. The conception was to provide fresh views in English in a discipline that has been mainly in German up to now (and hence hard to teach in UK or US). He wrote the introduction to the volume -- comprising an extensive survey of the entire field of sarcophagus studies over more than 100 years across the approaches of different European nations -- as well as a piece that extended its discussion of sarcophagi into Christian material.
