Additional information

This paper reports on work undertaken with collaborators from University of Sheffield and ELTRO Ltd. It presents a multi-technique analysis of the mechanisms of high friction and nano-scale spalling wear of a nanostructured TiAlCrYN coating. Dry-sliding friction mechanisms are fundamental to the development of protective coatings for many devices such as drills, cutting blades and components in automotive- and aero- engines.
