Additional information

First direct evidence for the role of dissoluble silicon on bone formation. Arose from joint project between the Perry and Kaplan labs funded by US National Institute of Health (NIH-1R01DE017207-01A2, 2007-13, $445,230 to Nottingham Trent). Led to related industrial (ABvista) and i-NET (£65,000) funding which underpinned spin-out company “Si-Active”. Helped secure further NIH funding (2R01-DE017207-06A1, 2013-17, $440,000 approximately to Nottingham Trent). Led to involvement of the Perry group in NSF funded ($2.7M) Soft Materials Robotics-IGERT at Tufts University, USA. Led to invited talks at “Silk threads of New Discovery” (France, 2012) and “Advances in Tissue Engineering” (Netherlands, 2013).
