A holistic model for coastal flooding using system diagrams and the Source–Pathway–Receptor (SPR) concept
Significance of output:
Over 200million people on the planet are at risk of coastal flooding. In the UK coast flood risk is estimated to be around £1billion/year. This work describes a structured approach to identify the key components of large floodplains and how flood events may affect them. Advanced numerical models of flooding cannot yet provide full predictions water movement over large floodplains. The approach enables hot spots to be identified which can then be analysed in more detail using numerical models. The method is being tested by government agencies in 8 countries as part of the €6.3m THESEUS project.
