A comparison of abnormal wave generation techniques for experimental modelling of abnormal wave-vessel interactions
Significance of output:
Research published over the last decade suggests that abnormal, or ‘rogue’, waves may be responsible for many previously unexplained ship sinkings. There is therefore a need to identify the risks associated with a ship encountering an abnormal wave and to be able to assess the effects on motions and structural loads arising from such an encounter. Presently this requires experimentation, or computation supported by validation. Whilst there are published methods to create abnormal waves experimentally, this paper compares them to each other with specific reference to advising on their use in design. The work was supported by Lloyd’s Register (LRF).
