Additional information

The outcomes of finger joint replacement are typically poor, with most designs suffering from early failure. This paper describes collaborative research between academia, industry and surgeons to develop a novel implant design for replacement of the finger joints. The initial research was undertaken while Shepherd held a Leverhulme Trust Special Research Fellowship. The design concept has been patented (US2006167559) and an exclusive license agreement is being discussed with a major medical device company (Professor Alan Johnstone, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, a.johnstone@nhs.net). This research has the potential to improve the lives of patients affected by arthritis of the finger joints.
