Additional information

Inadequate torsional rigidity of a bus structure lowers its rollover threshold under cornering manoeuvres. The rollover threshold can be raised by increasing the roll stiffness of the suspension but this is usually at the expense of ride quality. As a result of collaboration between Birmingham University and Carlos III University Madrid, an active roll system, developed using a fuzzy logic controller to provide additional roll stiffness during vehicle manoeuvring, has been implemented on a passenger bus by a Spanish bus manufacturer. Further collaboration is directed at improving torsional rigidity of bus structures (JAE Vol 225 (2) 2011).
