Double-weighted statement

This output is proposed for double-weighting submission because: a) it constitutes an extended study (90,000 words) of Rousseau’s political philosophy; b) it represents the first book-length investigation of the significance of that philosophy for the recent theories of democracy supplied by Claude Lefort, Chantal Mouffe, Ernesto Laclau and Jacques Derrida; c) it analyses Rousseau’s philosophical writings, the large corpus of work produced by the theorists mentioned above and also the extensive secondary literature on both objects of study; d) its scope means required a prolonged period of research and writing.
