Averaging underwater noise levels for environmental assessment of shipping
This paper presents the first systematic assessment of long-term underwater noise levels from shipping, measured at a new seafloor observatory. The work stems from an international collaboration, led by Blondel, with Ocean Networks Canada. The results are now used by the EC’s Technical Sub-Group Noise, advising the EU on the implementation of Descriptor 11 of Good Environmental Status according to the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The cumulative impact assessment metrics we propose are used to measure chronic impacts on marine fauna, e.g., by Curtin University, Australia. Merchant is a PhD student supervised by Blondel. The work is interdisciplinary with Physics.
