Additional information

This was an international collaboration led by Astin. This is one of two papers investigating polar ionospheric scintillation, which is a critical threat to the accuracy and integrity of GPS. This work quantifies for the first time using ionospheric imaging the effect of gradient drift wave amplitudes on GPS scintillation. Studies of this kind are necessary for the future development of mitigation strategies for GPS. Collaborators include the USAF Space Vehicles Directorate and the Italian Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. Burston was a PhD student supervised by Astin. This work is interdisciplinary with physics.
