Apparent latent heat of evaporation from clothing: attenuation and "heat pipe" effects
This paper demonstrates for the first time a mechanism for estimating the effect of a clothed person’s mass loss on their evaporative heat loss. The important findings from this research would help to protect workers wearing personal protective clothing (PPC) from discomfort due to thermal strains. This work was accomplished in collaboration with different organisations in Europe with all partners contributing to a European Union GROWTH Programme project. Resulting data and models have been disseminated to standards writers (PPC product standards and thermal stress, and strain assessment standards) and to producers and users of PPC.
