The new decade: A watershed in UK higher education?
This paper analyses patterns of applications, student behaviour, and performance, framed by the 2010 DBIS White Paper. It interrogates shifts in the market, and issues of equity and social mobility, drawing statistics from a range of published sources – ‘unknown knowns’. From an LFHE funded project, interviews with current and former senior university staff help identify the challenges for management and responses already evident in moves to corporate enterprise approaches. This is a first publication to identify these significant shifts and their implications for a stratified system and strategic funding, and the need for further cultural change in institutional management.
