This was a key paper developed in the context of a Forward Look project for the European Science Foundation. The Forward Look led to the establishment of a research programme on higher education and social change funded by the European Science Foundation which provided a unique platform for European collaboration and funding of 5 European research consortia. The paper provided a focus on higher education's contribution to inclusion, social justice and the public good and was presented to major stakeholders in European knowledge exchange events.
