Additional information

An overview of the work reported in this invited paper was given at a conference entitled “Colour and Design-Colour in Plants and Animals-Inspiration for Design” organised jointly by the Linnean Society and the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in London. This paper brought together a body of work on the understanding of the origins of structural colour, which was relevant and complementary to the group’s work on phosphors. Some of the materials described are also phosphors. The work was funded by EPSRC and TSB programmes and the papers findings were used to successfully apply for other TSB programmes.
